Senior Building Services (Mechanical) Design
Engineer
Background to Need
The Company an award winning engineering international firm
of consultant engineers with office throughout the UK and
overseas. From a total staff of 1000no. persons, they employ
around 350no. building services engineers. We have an immediate
need for a senior mechanical building services engineer, who
has the potential to act as Job Leader on building services
projects in our Glasgow Office.
The candidate will be based in the Glasgow office and could
be expected to travel frequently to the offices within the
UK offices and overseas.
The Job
A senior mechanical building services engineer position. The
position will be based in the Glasgow Office, but the engineer
will be expected to travel to North Europe and other UK based
offices.
Responsibilities
Working closely with clients, architects and other BH engineers
as part of a dedicated and skilled team
Excellent design skills
Expected to act as Job Leader on building services projects
At least 7/8 years design experience on a variety of high
profile projects
Building services engineering experience
Additional Duties
Maintain mechanical design files and maintain to a high standard.
Preparation of calculations in conjunction with Quality Management
System.
Maintaining an informed position on all projects within the
group.
Responsible for the independent design reviews, as per the
QMS system.
Management skills
Ability to communicate technical subjects
Required to implement total integrated techniques
Focus on technology based solutions, not hype
Desire and ability to innovate nationally in technological
solutions
The Person
Age 28+
At least 7/8 years post-grad experience within an engineering
design consultancy
IEE/CIBSE accredited, degree qualified
Good primary education.
Chartered Engineer is essential
NES Specification knowledge
Comprehensive experience in IES, Amtech, Cymap and Autocad
use
Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint
and Microsoft Outlook.
Good communication skills.
Technical Knowledge
Develop a solid technical knowledge and capability in environmental
passive design techniques, such as
renewable energy, low energy design techniques and sustainable
design techniques.
Develop a basic understanding in mechanical services design
Software skills in IES to be developed within the first three
months
Understand the impact of sustainability in building services
design
Project Administration
BH Report formatting and preparation skills to be developed.
BH Specification formatting and preparation skills to be developed.
Check and maintain electrical design files and operate to
a high standard.
Senior Engineer Role
Commence the Job Leader role, starting to take responsibility
for the mechanical and electrical aspects of
the project (technical solutions, reports, financial management,
calculations, quality control) reporting to the
Project Leader.
Undertake independent design reviews, as per the QMS system.
Actively participate in the mechanical technical forums and
technical design reviews.
The Companies Project Portfolio Knowledge
This person needs to understand the Companies brand and our
portfolio of past projects. The person represents the practise
at a high level and must be able to communicate its cultural
values and ensure that all aspects of the Company are well
respected, and represented as a strong player in a united
holistic multidisciplinary practise.

Project Leader
Job Leader Building Services
The JL will be responsible to the PL for the successful delivery
of the project in their discipline. They are to ensure technical
quality, timely delivery, financial performance and client
satisfaction in all matters relating to their discipline.
The Job Leader is responsible for:
1. Ensuring a precedent study is done of other similar buildings.
2. A written M & E brief is agreed with the client.
3. An invoicing schedule is agreed for the M & E services
element.
4. A schedule of deliverables for each stage is agreed with
the M & E team based on the fee and appointment requirements
(taking advantage of BH standards).
5. A meetings strategy is agreed including appropriate representation
and key meetings.
6. Ensuring an MEQS check is done and the team are aware of
capital cost of M & E compared to
budget.
7. A design workshop is done before stage D.
8. Ensuring stage D report is complete to the approved standard
and reviewed.
9. A design review is done before issue of detailed design
or tender documents.
10. Client feedback is actively sought at key stages eg scheme
and detailed design documents.
11. Mid- tender interviews are done to avoid scope/price gaps
and miss-understandings by tenderers.
12. Contract drawings are issued which reflect the contract
sum.
13. A record of key changes in scope or programme is kept.
14. Testing and commissioning is undertaken in a timely manner.
15. Post project evaluation and close out report are done.
